Smelt at School

You won't learn how to smelt gold here, but thanks for stopping by.

About Me

Blogger:
The smelting process (see above) is designed to remove impurities and capture the gold - it bears a striking similarity to writing a dissertation. Smelting's hotter, though.

perspective

Data entry is complete.  It went faster without musical accompaniment, but with me talking my way through the data entry, like so: 021003010002, 103003001011, etc. Such a micro focus hindered actual time to really think about the data I was entering, but I look forward to seeing what SPSS will illuminate.

As a birthday present to myself, I'm going to work on the dissertation first thing tomorrow. I am quite pleased with this decision, on more levels than I would've imagined even two days ago.  The equanimity and contentment I'm experiencing is unexpected, but joyously welcome.

on the diss

From comments on this post, on Academhack (Tech tools for academics) .

"Above everything else, a dissertation is an exercise designed to do two things: 1) teach you what patterns of thought and activity are required to write a book; 2) provide you with a writing sample for the job market."

So true - especially #1. This is why having finished the thesis so recently is a good thing.  I'm reminded that I'm learning a process and that the dissertation product is evidence that I've mastered that, almost as much as it is a description of my research and findings.

Data entry - two thirds left

Why is this all taking so long?

  1. We're selling our house, and I'm the "listing agent". There's quite a lot involved.
  2. There's also plenty of upkeep, sprucing up, and FSBO sign replacement that needs to be done.
  3. Plus, I've got to read a ton of FSBO discussion boards and freak myself out even more.
  4. Tumblr.
  5. Twitter.
  6. Teh internet, in general.
  7. Poor impulse control.
  8. All of the above.
On the plus side, the lunar eclipse this morning was beautiful.
