Smelt at School

You won't learn how to smelt gold here, but thanks for stopping by.

About Me

Blogger:
The smelting process (see above) is designed to remove impurities and capture the gold - it bears a striking similarity to writing a dissertation. Smelting's hotter, though.

Back on task

The sale of the house closed on Friday, so the weekend was spent attending to some of the things that have fallen apart in the previous few months. There was some sofa juggling and garage re-org and a goodwill trip and some TV and some laundry. I finally wore my regalia in public (one of the world's most expensive Hallowe'en costumes ever) and saw a comet  and rejoiced about good news from the vet. Mixed blessing: since the cat's med dosage has been reduced, he is both perkier and whinier. Now it is Monday and time to return to my most important work for the next few weeks. In addition to reconnecting with the yoga practice our friend and houseguest set up for me, I am also recommencing daily focus on the diss. At last, but for only a short time longer.

Discipline is the art of remembering what you want. I will remember.

xkcd cat and girl arcade fire

I love this comic. And this one.

We saw Arcade Fire in concert a few months ago and everyone was raving about the show but I just wasn't feeling it. They were inventive and all, but I wasn't as overwhelmed as everyone else. After listening to the CD again, I am stunned by the degree to which pain and painkillers dilute and cloud one's experience. It really must have been a great show - I was there, but I missed it.
Damn.

"Oh, snap!" A user's guide

Here. I admit to having been unclear on the concept. Fortunately, there's a flow chart for everything these days! via.

Other excellent pen and ink can be found at Jessica Hagy's Indexed and Hugh McCloud's Gaping Void.

In other news: the back car window is fixed - total loss: $1.35 in change plus $150 in repair costs. It's hard to explain why it's somehow worse that the thief didn't make off with more valuables. Anyone have an idea why this is? It feels similar to the complaint of "Not only is that restaurant's food so bad, but they serve such small portions." If I'm going to be hurt, make it hurt a lot? Uh, yeah, that totally makes sense.

Disswise, calculations for Hypothesis 2.2 and 2.3 are moving along. Still need to operationalize codes for the appendix (bo-ring! and it should have been done a long time ago!) Then I need to write everything up. It's not really that difficult but (or should that be and?) there's something in me that rebels at the simplicity of it. Hmmm. See previous paragraph.

It's delurker day!

Please say hello. I'll post something fun/interesting for as many days in a row as people comment.

I've discovered a new stopgap for when I want a break, but also want to be doing something useful: ReCaptcha, through which I can help digitize texts by using my human brain to decipher words that have been lined-through, smeared, or otherwise made illegible to an OCR reader. Addictive in a similar way as Google's image tagging, but far more satisfying.
