Smelt at School

You won't learn how to smelt gold here, but thanks for stopping by.

About Me

Blogger:
The smelting process (see above) is designed to remove impurities and capture the gold - it bears a striking similarity to writing a dissertation. Smelting's hotter, though.

pause

I got a phone call on the evening of my last post that has altered my progress somewhat. I'm currently back home helping out with a family emergency (things are on the upswing, thankfully), and will be here for another couple of weeks. Tonight was the first night I've done any appreciable work on the diss, which only showed how easy it is to get out of practice. Fortunately, I should have at least an hour a day and a clean workspace in which to write and think in the coming week.

The fact that it's almost twice as warm here is an unexpected bonus - I could almost be on a writing retreat, if only I could shut off my brain about the real reason I'm here. I'm just grateful to only have to deal with this level of mental noise - things could be far worse than they are, and I am getting to spend some pretty awesome quality time with part of my family. No matter what happens, the diss will still be there when I get back.

need to figure out - Questions for tomorrow

how to weight ratings for H 2.2? do I use 2-5 6-10 11-15 x a number, or do something else?

What counts as negative and what should be left out. I don't think I was clear enough about this in the proposal and it's kicking my ass.

H 2.3 seems to be in alignment with what I'd anticipated, but do I need to include the weighting scheme there too? This is the problem with using averages versus real numbers.

Are all the real ratings numbers still available? need to check, since these are more noteworthy than the averages, especially with the numbers I'm talking about.

Public Service Announcement -Verizon Privacy Invasion

Verizon Wireless is planning to share its customers' calling records (called CPNI) with "our affiliates, agents and parent companies (including Vodafone) and their subsidiaries." The article explains that CPNI "includes the numbers of incoming and outgoing calls and time spent on each call, among other data." Some subscribers, it's not known if it's all of them, received a letter in the mail giving them 30 days to opt out of this sharing by calling 1-800-333-9956. Skydeck, a mobile and wireless services company, seems to have been the first to call attention to the Verizon initiative on their blog; they also posted a scan of the letter (sideways PDF) from Verizon.

Do it fast - apparently the original letter went out in mid-October.
