I bought an “as-is” chair from Ikea and it’s really comfortable. It also stinks. Damn smokers! Two sessions of Febreeze and it still reeks. I’m irritated that it didn’t occur to me (me!) not to smell the chair before I picked it – especially because there were two, and now I’m convinced I bought the wrong one. Oh well. I suppose I'll turn it into a game: as soon as the diss is finished, I'll have earned a new chair. In the meantime, more Febreeze, and perhaps an ozone generator.
Teaching ended up well, and I got some fantastic evaluations. The good news: I’m good at leading discussion and making things relevant to students’ lives. I’m also very open to discussing whatever comes up, which makes for a welcoming and convivial environment. And, I really care about students’ learning. These are all things that I believed (or hoped!) about myself previously, so it’s incredibly gratifying to see that feedback from students.
The two students who really weren’t doing well reacted predictably – in fact, one of them actually wrote on the narrative that “Susan Chapsonk from the Business school advised him to take the class because it would be easy,” but that I “graded it too much like an English class,” so he felt aggrieved by my harshness, not to mention betrayed by his advisor. Poor guy. Another student thought that I could improve my teaching by dressing as a French maid and passing out pastries. What. Ever.
We’re enjoying some lovely spring weather right now, I just bought a new pair of running shoes (which I’ll use for walking) and my office is cleaned out and mostly ready for action. Unfortunately, the desk may well be too small for my needs, especially considering I finished up my thesis using most of the dining room table. I’m going to have to see how it goes, but I don’t have a lot of time to figure things out. Worse to worst, I’ll figure out a way to work better at school.
And now, time for dinner.
